First Birthday Photography Tips: How to Style Your Celebration & Capture Beautiful Memories
Updated: Aug 21

Your baby's first birthday is one of those milestones that somehow feels impossible.
It feels like yesterday you were counting tiny fingers and toes, and now you're watching a curious little person take their first steps, laugh at balloons, and dive into birthday cake with complete joy.
Whether you're planning an intimate family gathering or a big celebration with loved ones, a little preparation can make all the difference when it comes to creating photographs you'll treasure for years to come.
Here are a few of my favourite tips for styling your first birthday celebration and capturing beautiful memories throughout the day.

Keep the Styling Simple
When it comes to first birthdays, less is often more.
A few thoughtfully chosen decorations usually photograph much better than a room filled with lots of competing colours and decorations.
Consider choosing one colour palette and carrying it throughout your styling.
Some beautiful combinations include:
Soft whites and natural linen
Sage green and cream
Dusty blue with warm timber accents
Peach, blush and neutral tones
Terracotta with soft beige
Natural textures like linen tablecloths, timber furniture, fresh flowers and woven baskets create a timeless look that won't feel dated years from now.
Remember—the real focus should always be your little one.
Think About the Light
Beautiful light makes beautiful photographs.
If your party is during the day, try to position the cake table or key activities near a large window or outdoors in open shade.
Avoid placing your child directly in harsh midday sunlight, which can create strong shadows across their face.
If you're celebrating indoors, opening curtains and turning off overhead lights can often produce much softer, more natural-looking photographs.

Natural Light or Flash? Both Have Their Place
Many parents wonder whether they should use natural light or flash photography during their celebration.
The answer is that both can create wonderful images.
Natural Light
Natural light creates soft, timeless photographs with beautiful skin tones.
It's perfect when:
You're outdoors.
You're near large windows.
Your party is during daylight hours.
You want a relaxed, documentary feel.
Flash Photography
Modern flash photography can look incredibly natural when used well.
Flash is especially helpful when:
Your celebration continues into the evening.
You're indoors after sunset.
The venue has dim lighting.
You want sharp, vibrant images of moments that happen quickly.
Don't be afraid to use flash if the light is low. A well-lit photo of your child laughing is always better than a blurry one that's too dark to enjoy.
Capture More Than Just the Cake
While everyone loves the cake smash moment, some of the most meaningful photographs happen before the cake even appears.
Look for moments like:
Tiny hands holding balloons.
Grandparents cuddling your little one.
Siblings playing together.
Guests arriving.
Curious expressions as everyone sings Happy Birthday.
Little details like party invitations, birthday outfits and tiny shoes.
These are often the memories that become even more precious as the years pass.

Get Down to Their Level
One of the simplest ways to instantly improve your photos is to photograph from your child's eye level.
Instead of standing above them, kneel or sit on the floor.
The world feels much more immersive from their perspective, and your photographs will feel more connected and personal.
Don't Forget to Be in the Photos
Parents are often so busy hosting that they end the day with hundreds of photos of everyone else—but hardly any of themselves.
Ask a friend or family member to take a few photographs of you cuddling your birthday boy or girl.
One day, those images will likely mean just as much to your child as the birthday itself.
Dress for Timelessness
Simple outfits tend to photograph beautifully.
Soft neutral colours, linen, cotton and subtle textures keep the attention on your child's expressions rather than busy patterns or large logos.
If possible, coordinate the family's outfits without matching exactly.
Think complementary colours rather than identical clothing.
Complete the Story with a First Birthday Cake Smash Studio Session
While party photographs beautifully capture the excitement of the celebration, many families also love creating a dedicated set of first birthday portraits in a calm studio environment.
A studio cake smash session gives your little one the space to explore, play and enjoy the experience without the distractions of a busy party.
It also allows us to capture:
Beautiful first birthday portraits before the cake
Family photographs together
The cake smash itself
Sweet bath splash photos afterwards (if included)
Without guests waiting or party schedules to work around, we can take our time and create a relaxed experience that lets your child's personality shine.
Many families choose to display both their celebration photographs and their studio portraits together, creating a complete story of this incredible milestone.
